“VAW-free community starts with me”, the 18-Day Campaign to End Gender-based Violence Against Women (VAW) is observed annually from November 25 to December 12 around the globe. Proclamation 1172 s. 2006 declares the support of the Philippine Government which goal is to protect the human rights of women and its commitment to address all forms of VAW, consistent with the Magna Carta of Women.
This annual event emphasizes that Violence Against Women (VAW) is a human right violation. It further envisions a world free from all forms of violence against women and girls suppressing issues like human trafficking, rape, sexual harassment and other situations in conflict and calamity.
With this year’s theme, the campaign gives emphasis on our continuous pursuit of achieving a VAW-free community through everyone’s commitment and contributions to ending VAW.
“ME” can be viewed from various perspectives—of a woman/girl, a man/boy, a government agency or local government unit, an academe/training institutions in empowering the rights of women, speaking out of any committed violations, and engaging oneself in the protection of human rights of all women.
Never commit, condone and remain silent about VAW. Seek help, report and spread the word of freedom from VAW. (by: Maria Cristina F. Martinez)
