The five (5) 100 millionth symbolic babies in the region are set to celebrate their 8th birthday on July 27, 2022.

Eight years ago, the region welcomed the births of Ricobien Jacob Francisco, regional representative; Princess Coleen dela Cruz of Ilocos Norte; Xyrus Jeic Alonzo of Ilocos Sur, Trixie Ann Estalilla of La Union; and Jhon Paul Pedronio of Pangasinan. Their births highlighted the significance of the Philippine Population and Development Program (PPDP) and signified a challenging demographic moment embodying the symbol of hope to make every Filipino count in prosperity and development.

For this year, the celebration will revolve around the theme “Bigyang Halaga ang Bawat Pinoy sa Pag-unlad Ngayon at Bukas!” with the sub-theme, “Sa Ika-walong Taon: Edukasyon at Kalusugan, Palakasin bilang Saligan ng Kaunlaran.”

The Commission on Population and Development (POPCOM), in its pursuit to make people at the center of development, together with its partner agencies and the local government units (LGUs), continue to monitor the growth and development of the symbolic 100 millionth Filipinos. As such, a status monitoring of the symbolic babies is regularly conducted to determine their overall condition and the type of support that still needs to be extended to them and their respective families in the coming years.

A Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) was also signed in 2019 for the institutionalization of the support and commitments of the Regional Working Group (RWG) for the symbolic babies of the region. The agreement was signed among the RWG, composed of agencies such as the Department of Health Center for Health Development, Department of Social Welfare and Development, PhilHealth, Philippine Statistics Authority, Department of Education, National Nutrition Council, Commission on Population and Development, Ilocos Training and Regional Medical Center, and the Local Government Unit of Bacnotan.

Birthday gifts such as various educational materials and health supplements based on the babies’ developmental needs were also provided to them yearly by the RWG and the concerned LGUs.

Highlight of this year’s regional celebration is the video documentation of the five symbolic babies, focusing especially with the millionth baby of Ilocos Norte. The documentation will form part of the episode of the Beshytaktakan: Usap Tayo which will be aired through the official Facebook Page of POPCOM Region I on July 29, 2022 at 1:00PM.
