In pursuit of contributing to the improvement and promotion of the total well-being of the young people by addressing the issues related to their sexual and reproductive health and rights, the Commission on Population and Development-I (POPCOM), in partnership with the Department of Education (DepEd) and Department of Health (DOH), successfully conducted the 2019 Regional Adolescent Health and Development (AHD) Film Orientation-Workshop.

This year’s film fest theme, “The Youth and the Demographic Transition”, was the focus of the 5-minute documentary film output of the participants during the film orientation-workshop. The theme emphasizes the issues and needs that beset young people of today and how they affect the country’s pursuit to achieve the demographic dividend. Meeting the needs of these young people contributes largely to the attainment of their full development into adulthood.

Fifty-two (52) student participants together with their coaches coming from the 12 school divisions regionwide actively participated in the orientation-workshop held on July 24-26, 2019 in Hotel Ariana, Bauang, La Union. The 3-day event is a pre-requisite for the participants to join the AHD Film Festival Awarding, which is set on September of this year.

Renowned and award-winning filmmakers from the HABI Collective Media, a media production company that focuses on weaving narratives for and about “The Organik” Filipino — culture, lifestyle, advocacy, events, and personal milestones — through photography, videography, and copywriting, were tapped to coach and mentor the participants during the workshops. Among the topics discussed were Research and Documentary Scriptwriting, Cinematography for Documentaries, and SOGIE, Ethics and the Responsibilities of a Documentary Filmmaker.

After the orientation-workshop, five (5) school divisions were awarded as the Top 5 Best Documentary Films. They are as follows:
• Top 1-Dagupan City Division
• Top 2-Ilocos Sur Division
• Top 3-Pangasinan II Division
• Top 4-Pangasinan I Division
• Top 5-San Carlos City Division

The Division of Alaminos City was also chosen to be the Best Pitch during the orientation-workshop.

According to POPCOM-I Regional Director Erma R. Yapit, the festival is one of the many approaches of the agency in helping the young people in the crucial stage of their development so that they will grow into healthy, responsible and productive adults.
