The Population and Development (POPDEV) Week is being celebrated annually every November 23-29 as per Executive Order No. 76. It is being celebrated to drumbeat and to emphasize the interrelationships of population issues and development. The celebration also aims to raise awareness and appreciation and draw policy and program responses from various stakeholders on population and development issues.

This year’s celebration is focused on the theme “Ang Pamilyang Planado, Panalo!”. The theme emphasizes the importance of a well-planned family towards the achievement of a better quality of life in the country.

With the intensified implementation of the National Program on Population and Family Planning (NPPFP), the Commission on Population and Development (POPCOM)-I is conducting more demand generation and service delivery activities in the region such as Responsible Parenthood and Family Panning (RPFP) Caravans, USAPAN and Family Development Sessions, and House to House Visits to enable couples as well as individuals to achieve their fertility intentions, reduce the incidence of teenage pregnancy cases, and integrate population factors in development initiatives such as policymaking, planning, and program implementation.

The program also aims to implement strategies to address unmet need for family planning and to increase the modern contraceptive prevalence rate. Out of the 1192 total number of unmet need for family planning from September to October, 1006 have been referred/served. Pills, injectables, and sub-dermal implants are the commonly most served method from September to October 2019.

Two RPFP caravans have already been conducted in the province of Pangasinan which have been chosen as the priority area due to its population situation for the intensified NPPFP campaign. One is in Bugallon last October 18 and in Calasiao last November 6. Nine caravans are still to be conducted in the region: six in Pangasinan and one each in La Union, Ilocos Sur and Ilocos Norte.

Meanwhile, under the regular demand generation activities of the region from January to October 2019, the Commission have already reached 44,586 couples/individuals out of the 45,514 annual target individuals and couples to be reached. In addition, out of the 6994 total unmet need for family planning, 6974 clients have been referred/served.

POPCOM-I enjoin advocates for family planning, representing local governments, private organizations, civil society organizations, academe, and media to simultaneously help raise awareness about the country’s reproductive health situation and to provide better service delivery to all Filipinos.
