POPCOM 1 shouting their yell during the roll call of the participating agencies during the 2020 Women’s Month kick off activity on March 6, 2020 at DMMMSU-MLUC, City of San Fernando, La Union.

In celebration of the 2020 Women’s Month Celebration this March, the Commission on Population and Development (POPCOM) I together with other government agencies and institutions participated in the kick off activity initiated by the Region 1 Advocates for Gender Equality (RAGE-1) on March 6, 2020. With the theme “We Make Change Work for Women,” the activity included a zumba marathon, fun games, and a GADvocacy Talk featuring Hon. Sandra Y. Eriguel, Congressional Representative of the Second District of La Union and Ms. Elizabeth Sheila Marquez-Milo, Municipal Administrator of Agoo, La Union. A Health and Wellness Fair (Serbisyo para kini Juan at Juana) was also held in the afternoon where participating government agencies gave free services to the public.

In a recent data from the Philippine National Police as compiled by the Philippine Statistics Authority-I, cases of violence against women are still high in the region (1,054 reported cases in 2019) with physical/sexual abuse ranking the highest (385 cases) and mostly by the male relatives of the victim (767 cases).

In a statement, POPCOM Deputy Executive Director Lolito R. Tacardon said “The most effective way to make change happen for women and girls is to start understanding the evolving contexts where gender issues operate. Through this, we will realize that our existing interventions have now become less effective and relevant. And as such, we need to adapt to relevant changes in order to effect a genuine promotion of gender equality.”The National Women’s Month Celebration every March is part of the worldwide observance of the International Women’s Day (IWD). Proclamation No. 227 s. 1988 provides for the observance of March as Women’s Role in History Month.
