The Commission on Population and Development (POPCOM) in region one is targeting Pangasinan for its intensified implementation of the National Program on Population and Family Planning (NPPFP).

“This project will focus in Pangasinan because of its high population growth rate and wide magnitude of poverty among other provinces in the Ilocos region,” POPCOM Regional Director Erma R. Yapit said.

During the NPPFP orientation on Wednesday, September 11, Yapit stressed the need to address the gap of wanted and the actual number of children among those with low educational attainment and low income families.

She also tapped the Provincial Population Cooperative and Livelihood Development officers together with the region’s and district project coordinators to fully reach out couples and sexually active individuals because of the high prevalence rate of unmet need for family planning services.

As a move, family planning caravan, information and service delivery, namely, “Couples’ Trail”, “USAPAN SERYE” and “KATROPA” will be undertaken simultaneously.

Furthermore, a dialogue between the agency and heads from the population office of Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur and La Union was made to determine targets from local government units within their respective area for the needed interventions in order to boost the implementation of the family planning program.

For the month of September to December, the agency targets 41,177 couples and sexually active individuals for modern family planning method.
“ I hope we will help one another for the full implementation of the program,” Yapit formally disclosed.

This strategy moreover, is in line with the socio-economic agenda of President Rodrigo Duterte’s Administration. It is aimed at ensuring the achievement of the Philippine Development Plan target of 65 percent on modern contraceptive prevalence rate and lowering down the fertility to the replacement rate of 2.1 percent by 2022.
