The Commission on Population and Development (POPCOM) observed its golden anniversary on February 19, 2019 with the theme “POPCOM@50: Naglilingkod tungo sa Planado at Maginhawang Pamilyang Pilipino.”

A general assembly was held on February 19-23, 2019 in the POPCOM Central Office Grounds and Tagaytay International Convention Center to recognize POPCOM’s milestones and achievements for the last 50 years.

Prior to the main event, POPCOM regional offices were enjoined to drumbeat the celebration through a social media campaign using the official hashtag #POPCOMat50, and sharing of trivia about POPCOM and success stories with POPCOM. POPCOM partner agencies were also enjoined through the hanging of the 50th anniversary streamer.

Notable events during the week long celebration are the launching of new POPCOM publications: Sexually Healthy and Personally Empowered (SHAPE) Adolescents Modules Toolkit, AHD for ISDN Guidebook, Natural Family Planning Manual and Handbook, Pre-Marriage Orientation and Counseling Module, Parent Teen Talk Toolkit, and National Action Plan to Achieve Demographic Dividend Handbook; recognition of former POPCOM officials and employees; launching of the POPCOM song and the National Program on Family Planning (NPFP); meet up with POPCOM counterparts; and POPCOM Got Talent.

With POPCOM spearheading the NPFP, USEC Juan Antonio A. Perez, III stressed that “It is our true mission to make people at the center of development – and Family Planning is one way to make them at the center. Huwag kalimutan ang tao sa kaunlaran, sa kalikasan, at sa panahon ng disaster.”

Since its creation in February 19, 1969, POPCOM has taken the lead in empowering Filipino families through responsible parenting, adolescent health and development, and population and development integration.
